About Us

Red Hills Ranch, LLC (FL # L21000232549) is a small, 23-acre ranch located in Tallahassee, Florida. Owned and operated by Chris and Pam Griggs & family. We are committed to raising and promoting "heritage" breeds with conservation priority status. Saving these breeds is a matter of demonstrating their usefulness and generating increased demand.

The Ranch is named for the Red Hills Region (also known as the Tallahassee Hills) where we are located. The Red Hills is a geographic region of gently rolling hills in South Georgia and North Florida, with rich, clay mixture soil that gives it a red appearance. The Red Hills Region is designated by the Nature Conservancy as one of America's "Last Great Places". Step outside on the Red Hills Ranch and you will see why!

As America's livestock industry became increasingly commercialized and specialized, general-purpose livestock breeds ("heritage breeds") that served family farms and homesteads since the founding of our country began to disappear, along with an American lifestyle characterized by a spirit of self-sufficiency. With the resurgence of interest in small-scale homesteading, Red Hills Ranch is committed to preserving this old way of life, along with only keeping and breeding American livestock listed on The Livestock Conservancy's Conservation Priority List, with a preference for those that have a deep-rooted history in Florida first, the South second, and the good ole' USA third.

They want to ensure that the food they buy is environmentally-friendly, sustainable, and ethically-produced. Red Hills Ranch breeds for natural disease resistance, and uses natural grass grazing or supplemental feed without any sort of growth hormones. Further, we love our animals! They are given a level of care and attention closer to that of pets than livestock. They have names. They enjoy space to roam, quality food, clean water, shelter, veterinarian care, comfort, and happiness. We live on our farm, and interact with the animals multiple times a day.  Butchering for us is a solemn, respectful event and done humanely.

You have probably heard the oft-repeated suggestion to "buy local!" But have you ever stopped to consider why that's a good idea? Buying local indeed has many benefits that you may not have considered. For example, did you realize buying local can help the environment through reducing carbon emissions by eliminating the need for cross-country transport? Buying local also keeps money in the local economy, instead of exporting it to a far-away corporate headquarters or stock investors. We live here and buy here. So the money may very well come back to you, your neighbors, and our many great local businesses. We are committed to providing you an option for locally-raised food.
